Today Doctors at the Chandigarh’s PGIMER successfully reattached a Punjab Police ASI’s hand which was chopped off in an attack by a group of Nihangs in Patiala district of Punjab on Sunday Morning.
Assistant Sub-Inspector of Punjab Police, Harjeet Singh’s hand was cut with a Sword, while 3 other Policemen were injured, when the Nihangs attacked them after being asked to show curfew passes at a vegetable market in Patiala district.
After a phone call from Dinkar Gupta, DG Police,Punjab to Dr.Jagat Ram, Director PGI,Chandigarh, Dr.Ram activated the emergency team at Advanced Trauma Centre,PGI & gave the responsibility to Prof.Ramesh Sharma, HOD of Plastic Surgery to organize hand re-implantation of a 50 yrs old ASI of Punjab Police.
Plastic Surgery Team consisted of Consultants-Dr.Sunil Gaba,Dr.Jerry R John. Senior Residents-Dr.Suraj Nair, Dr.Mayank, Dr.Chandra and Dr.Shubendu. Anaesthesia Team Consultant-Dr.Ankur, Senior Resident-Dr.Abhishek and Dr.Purnima, Nursing Team S/N Arvind, S/N Sneha and S/N Arsh.
This 50 years old patient had an amputation through the proximal wrist of left hand. The re-implantation started around 10 am after initial preparation of the amputated part. This was technically a very complex and challenging surgery, but it was successfully done by this Dynamic Team of Doctors & Paramedics. The surgery took about 7.5 hours to complete.
Hopefully brave officer of Punjab Police, Harjeet Singh will get back to his duty soon.
